METHODS:
This study is an epidemiological study, conducted between November 2017 and December 2017 in three different universities in Jeddah. A self-administered online questionnaire was used to assess the use of electronic cigarettes and conventional cigarettes.
RESULTS:
A total of 1,007 respondents responded to an electronic survey that was distributed to 3,000 health science college students. Of the participants 14.1% were smokers, and 46% of them were regular smokers. Students who smoke half a pack a day or more represent 22% of smokers. More students use electronic cigarettes (27.7%). Also, one-fifth of e-cigarette smokers use it every day. The survey found that 42.7% of e-cigarette smokers have used it to quit smoking. Interestingly, more than half (56.7%) of the students who used it to quit smoking were successful. However, only 46% of e-cigarette smokers who have tried to quit vaping have been successful. During adolescence, college students who perceived smoking as more addictive than vaping or e-cigarettes recommended for smoking cessation had a greater likelihood of quitting smoking in a univariate regression analysis. Whereas, in the multivariate analysis, students who think smoking is more addictive than e-cigarettes; students started to go out to quit smoking, or use e-cigarettes with fruits that have a great chance to quit smoking.
